pic of the day 101-200

This is the Rila monastery aka base camp for the St. Ivan hut. It struck me as more of a fortress as it had fortifications complete with dwelling chambers surrounding the courtyard area. One entrance in the front, and one at the rear. This image is taken from the front entrance tunnel looking into the courtyard where the church is, which is the building with the contrasting black and white tiles. There is also a large bell tower next to the church which was used for religious purposes but also as a warning signal. Supposedly the bells can be heard for almost 25 miles and were often used to warn of approaching raiders as the monastery is in a strategic position amidst a pass in the Rila mountains.
