This is a painting by one of my favorites Jean Dubuffet titled "Wall with Inscriptions" 40 x 30 inches, oil on canvas, 1945. The piece was exhibited in the recent Dubuffet show at MoMA. I think it is an important painting because not only does it express Dubuffet's fascination with what many may have considered "every day life" or "mundane" subject matter, but I also think it reveals where Dubuffet may have drawn from some of his aesthetic inspiration. Most importantly I think it reveals how Dubuffet was an artist ahead of his time as this piece could easily be displayed amidst a young street art/graffiti art show today.
